The beauty benefits of Coconut Oil

Monday, 17 November 2014

I know this is old news now but I still had to dedicate a post to the wonderful miracle that is Coconut Oil! I can't get enough of the stuff and want to shout from the rooftops about it. I've read lots of articles and blogs about how to use coconut oil and include it in your diet and seen lots of nutritionists instagram healthy coconut infused superfood dishes, but for me I've found it a must -have beauty miracle balm!

Using coconut oil on your hair and skin is a great and natural way to enhance radiance, shine and inject utter goodness into it without exposing yourself to the damaging effects of harsh chemicals that so many of our loved beauty favourites unfortunately include.

HAIR // As coconut oil is quite solid in consistency its best to help soften it before treating your hair so I suggest putting 4/5 teaspoons of it into a microwavable dish and heat it up for 30 seconds. Once its slightly cooler start by rubbing the coconut oil into your scalp for an overall hair and scalp treatment- its very important to give your scalp the TLC it needs it helps with the overall condition of your hair (also encourages growth too!). If you just want to use the coconut oil to treat dry or split ends then apply to the ends of your hair after shampooing and leave for 10 mins before washing away. Let your hair dry naturally so let the goodness soak in properly. I've been doing this once a week for the last month and my hair looks so lovely and shiny!

SKIN // I've been using my coconut oil as an intensive night cream, the antioxidants leave your complexion glowing with radiance- (also great for fine lines and wrinkles too!). I've been using it twice a week before I go to sleep and each time I've woken up to baby soft skin. It also works as a super hydrating body lotion too- just make sure you melt it a little before hand otherwise it can be very hard to spread.
If you suffer from stretch marks then coconut oil is great way to prevent them, while it won't fade the marks it will stop the dark spots and blisters from forming. Mums-to-be this is a great investment!

LIP BALM // Coconut oil makes a great nourishing lip balm, it starts to melt when it touches the lips so you only need a tiny bit to spread over your pout.

MOUTH // Coconut oil has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, try gargling a teaspoon in your mouth for as long as you can (20 minutes is the ideal amount of time to allow it to work most effectively). This is known as 'Oil Pulling' and can help clear up germs in the mouth, leading to fresher breath, whiter teeth, and healthier gums. My wisdom teeth are coming through and this has been my remedy!

MAKEUP BRUSH CLEANER // Cleaning your makeup brushes should be a monthly ritual! Make your own You DIY brush cleaner using two parts antibacterial soap and one part coconut oil.
